11 Hours of maddening labor
In keeping with my obsession with testing my patience and long hours of uncomfortable cramps (see SQUARES), I had a late-night "vision" to create rings with a classic BIC Four-Color Ball Pen. Upon creating a few rings it was apparent they resembled the concentric tree rings (each one representing a year's growth). They are a reminder of the fragile longevity of all living things. In this fast-paced digital world, the slow and meticulous act of drawing each ring seems to slow time. You learn about yourself when you spend so much time creating something from scratch and by hand. To make matters more interesting, the ink doesn't rest on the 140 Lb cold pressed cotton well, so each ring must be overlapped 2 to 3 times. This process creates beautiful "mistakes" and visible concave grooves into the paper. Each ring, with its own unique features, becomes a character in a story and that story is unique for each gazer.
